Renesas RA4W1 Microcontroller
MCU with on-chip Bluetooth 5.0 radio offers superior link budget and enhanced security features
Renesas has introduced the RA4W1, the first RA series microcontroller to feature an integrated Bluetooth® 5.0 radio. Offering best-in-class output power consumption and sensitivity, the RA4W1 MCU can achieve a higher link budget and longer range than any other Bluetooth wireless MCU.
The Renesas RA4W1 is ideal for use in IoT devices because its integrated Secure Crypto Engine provides security functions to protect systems from network-borne attack. It implements symmetric encryption and decryption, hash functions, true random number generation, key generation, and custom key wrapping.
The single-chip RA4W1 MCU includes a 32-bit Arm® Cortex®-M4 core operating at up to 48MHz. It is backed by an easy-to-use Flexible Software Package (FSP) which accelerates engineers’ use of Arm ecosystem software and hardware building blocks from the start of a development project.
The RA4W1 microcontroller features 512kbytes of field-upgradeable Flash memory and 96kbytes of SRAM. The radio portion of the MCU includes a full range of Bluetooth 5.0 functions, and achieves data throughput of up to 2Mbits/s. The MCU supports all advertising extension functions, periodic advertisements, and channel selection algorithm #2 for applications carrying large amounts of traffic.
The RA4W1 by Renesas is supplied with a basic protocol stack package and all standard profiles. In addition, Renesas provides several applications programming interface functions which conform to standard profiles, including a Heart Rate Profile (HRP), an Environment Sensing Profile (ESP), and an Automation I/O profile (AIOP).
Renesas’ innovative development environment for the RA4W1 includes a Smart Configurator GUI which generates Bluetooth code and MCU peripheral-function driver code, as well as pin settings for the e2 Studio integrated development environment. Another Renesas tool generates programs for custom Bluetooth Low Energy profiles, and embeds them in user application programs.
And the Bluetooth Trial Tool Suite GUI allows users to perform initial evaluation of wireless characteristics, and Bluetooth functional verification.
The RA4W1 includes a high-precision, low-speed on-chip oscillator, and an RF oscillator adjustment circuit and on-chip matching circuit for easy antenna connection.
The RA4W1 is housed in a 56-pin, 7mm x 7mm QFN package.
