On this edition of Future Picks:
STMicroelectronics provides a complete solution for USB Type-C Power Delivery (USB-C PD) allowing customers to design applications requiring up to 100 W of power (20V-5A).
Why we picked this:
USB Type-C is by far the preferred communication interface in many embedded systems. This will quickly extend to more and more devices.
Did you know?
By the end of 2024, all mobile phones, tablets and cameras sold in the EU will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port. From spring 2026, the obligation will extend to laptops.
Under the new rules, consumers will no longer need a different charger every time they purchase a new device, as they will be able to use one single charger for a large range of small and medium-sized portable electronic devices.
Regardless of their manufacturer, all new mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones and headsets, handheld videogame consoles and portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems, earbuds and laptops that are rechargeable via a wired cable, operating with a power delivery of up to 100 Watts, will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C port.
The benefits include:
- More interoperability with dual role technology
- More power
- More protocols
- More protection
Things to consider when designing a USB Type-C solution:
To manage the high power path, TCPP protections (TCPP stands for USB Type-C Port Protection) integrate ESD, Overvoltage, Overcurrent, Overtemperature protections as well as features required by the USB-C PD standard such as: Dead Batteries resistors (RD) management, VBUS and VCONN discharge path.
TCPP products differentiate from other USB-C PD competitive protections by integrating a Low Power Mode to maximize battery life and by the availability of development tools included in the STM32 ecosystem such as Nucleo Expansion boards and software.
TCPP products have been tailored for each use case of the USB-C PD: Sink (charging devices), Source (like power adapters), Dual Role Power (like power banks able to behave like Sink or Source) to make them cost efficient for all customers.
