What is a RS-232?

In telecommunications, RS-232 is the name of the standard for serial binary single-ended data and control signals between a DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) and a DCE (Data Circuit-terminating Equipment). RS 232 is commonly used in a computer’s serial port. The RS232 standard defines the electrical characteristics as well as the timing of signals, their meaning and the physical size and pin out of the connectors. An RS-232 port can be found in PCs for connections to peripheral devices. However, due to their limited transmission speed and large connector sizes, the USB was developed. RS 232 devices can also be found in industrial machines or scientific instruments. The RS232 standard sets acceptable signal and voltage levels, along with common pinout configurations for wiring serial connector ports. The standard also specifies the protocols for control information between devices, including events such as indicating the beginning or end of a data stream.

Types of RS 232 chips

There are many different kinds of RS-232 chips and at Future Electronics we stock many of the most common types categorized by data rate, supply voltage, operating temperature range, packaging type and ESD voltage. The parametric filters on our website can help refine your search results depending on the specifications required.

The most common sizes for Data rate are 120 kbps, 230 kbps, 250 kbps and 1000 kbps. We also carry RS232 chips with data rate sizes up to 10 Mbps. Operating temperature can range from -40 oC to 75 oC.

Applications for RS232 chips:

RS-232 chips can be found in computers, printers and test instruments. For several years, an RS-232-compatible port was used in serial communications such as modem connections on l computers. In personal computer peripherals, it has largely been supplanted by the USB. RS232 is still being used to connect older designs of peripherals, industrial equipment, PLCs, console ports, and special equipment such as a cash register’s cash drawer.

Choosing the RS-232 chip:

When you are looking for the right RS 232 chip or RS 232 / 485 chip, with the FutureElectronics.com parametric search, you can filter the results by various attributes: by Data Rate (120 kbps, 230 kbps, 250 kbps, …), Operating temperature range (-40 oC to 75 oC), Supply Voltage (up to 20V) and ESD Voltage (up to 2.5 kV) to name a few. You will be able to find the right chip for programming your system including for a RS-232 to RS-485 converter, RS-232 to ethernet, RS-232 to serial port, RS232 splitter, RS 232 to USB or RS-232 port,. RS 232 and RS 232 / RS 485 chips in Production Ready Packaging or R&D Quantities

If the quantity of RS-232 and RS-232 / 485 chips required is less than a full reel, we offer customers many of our RS232 and RS232/485 products in tube, tray or individual quantities that will avoid unneeded surplus.
