More Information on LEDs...
What is an LED?
LEDs, or light emitting diodes, are semiconductor diodes that allow current to flow in only one direction. A diode is formed by bringing two slightly different materials together to form a PN junction, where the P side contains excess positive charge (holes) while the N side contains excess negative charge (electrons). When a forward voltage is applied to the semiconductor element that forms the PN junction, electrons move from the N area toward the P area and holes move toward the N area. The electrons and holes combine near the junction. Energy is released in the form of light that is emitted by the LED as this occurs. When a light emitting diode is switched on, electrons are able to recombine with electron holes within the device, therefore releasing energy in the form of photons. This is called electroluminescence and the color of the light, which corresponds to the photon’s energy, is determined by the energy gap of the semiconductor.
Types of LEDs
There are many different kinds of LEDs. At Future Electronics we stock many of the most common types categorized by color, viewing angle, lens type, dimensions, forward voltage, forward current, packaging type and intensity. The parametric filters on our website can help refine your search results depending on the required specifications. The most common types for the lens are clear, diffused and tinted / diffused. We also carry many other different types of lens. Forward voltage can range from 3.2 mV to 24 kV, with the most common sizes being 2 V, 2.1V and 2.2 V.

Applications for LEDs:
Light emitting diodes can be found in applications from many areas such as aviation and automotive lighting, advertising, general lighting and lights for traffic signals. LEDs have allowed new text, live video, video displays and sensors to be developed. The high switching rates of LEDs are also useful in advanced communications technology. Infrared LEDs can be found in the remote controls of several consumer products such as TVs, DVD players, washing machines and other household electronics and appliances.
Choosing the Right LED:
When you are looking for the right LEDs, with the FutureElectronics.com parametric search, you can filter the results by various attributes: by Color (Amber, Blue, Red, Red/Green,…), Forward Voltage (3.2 mV to 24 kV) and Viewing Angle (from 4o to 280o) to name a few. You will be able to find the right programmable LED chip from several manufacturers that can be used for a LED light bulb, LED flashlight, white LED, smd LED, super bright LED, light emitting diode circuit, small LED, blue LED, LED car bulbs, LED lights for a home or any other LED for lighting or programming.
