STMicroelectronics BlueNRG-LP Bluetooth® Low Energy System-on-Chip

Offering better range, throughput, reliability and security

STMicroelectronics has introduced a new Bluetooth® Low Energy (LE) System-on-Chip (SoC) which takes advantage of the features in the latest Bluetooth 5.2 specification to extend communication range, increase data throughput, strengthen security, and save power.

The BlueNRG-LP SoC’s ultra-low power Bluetooth radio consumes as little as 3.4mA in receive mode, just 4.3mA when transmitting, and less than 500nA in quiescent mode, cutting the size of battery needed in most applications, and prolonging run-time between charges.

BlueNRG-LP, the third generation of Bluetooth SoCs from STMicroelectronics, is the world’s first Bluetooth LE 5.2-certified SoC to support concurrent connections with up to 128 nodes. This enables seamless, low-latency control and monitoring of large numbers of connected devices, such as smart lights, via a smartphone app or other Bluetooth-enabled controller.

As well as supporting higher network density, the BlueNRG-LP’s connections can also cover a wider area thanks to its high RF output power, which is programmable up to +8dBm, and sensitivity up to -104dBm. Communication range can be extended even further by implementing Bluetooth LE Mesh networking, now fully certified as part of the comprehensive BlueNRG software and hardware ecosystem.

In addition, the BlueNRG-LP SoC supports Bluetooth Long Range mode, which uses coded physical layers with forward error correction to extend radio communication range up to hundreds of meters and to increase the reliability of connections. The SoC also implements generic attribute (GATT) caching to enable it to make quick and efficient connections.

The protocol stack supplied by STMicroelectronics is provided as a free-of-charge and compiler-independent linkable library supported by various integrated development environments. The modular stack has a small memory footprint, and offers low latency, interoperability, and over-the-air upgradability for the lifetime of the host device.

Bluetooth features supported by the stack include:

  • Extended advertising and scanning
  • High duty-cycle non-connectable advertising
  • Extended packet length
  • 2Mbits/s data throughput

The BlueNRG-LP SoC is available in a choice of packages:

  • 5mm x 5mm QFN32
  • 6mm x 6mm QFN48
  • 3.1mm x 3.1mm 49-lead wafer-level chip-scale package

Two operating temperature ranges are available:

  • -40°C to 105°C
  • -40°C to 85°C
