Melexis Triphibian™: A New Pressure Sensing Technology

Geared for automotive thermal management designs among other key industries

Melexis has launched their new Triphibian™ technology, a highly attractive solution for a wide range of automotive and industrial applications, setting a new standard in MEMS pressure sensing.

With the new patented technology, withstanding pressures far more than 5 bar and remaining in contact with liquid media is a game changer for the automotive industry, as well as some adjacent markets.

How does the Triphibian™ technology work?

The Triphibian™ sensing element by Melexis features a suspended cantilever within the IC package, with the membrane positioned at its tip. This unique cantilever design equalizes pressure spikes and burst levels across the entire structure, making it inherently more robust compared to back side exposed solutions, which still experience pressure differences between the glass pedestal side and the wire bonding side. Additionally, this pressure equalization capability extends to frozen media, enabling the use of MEMS in such environments for the first time.

How will certain automotive and industrial designs benefit from Triphibian™ technology?

The new sensor technology facilitates the simple mechanical integration and operation of the sensor within automotive thermal management designs. Thanks to the SOIC16 package, it gives the possibility to easily seal the sensor while making the electrical connections, by soldering the device to a PCB.

Where does the name Triphibian™ come from?

Per Melexis, “the name Triphibian™ comes from being able to measure the pressure of two states of matter (liquid and gas) while surviving in the two remaining ones (solid and plasma).”

Adjacent Markets

Besides automotive thermal management, Triphibian™ MEMS pressure sensor technology can have an impact on managing local water consumption, being just one example of an adjacent market.
