STMicroelectronics STEF01 Electronic Fuse Provides Many Configuration and Control Options
The STEF01 from STMicroelectronics is a universal integrated electronic fuse which may be used to monitor the output current and input voltage on DC power lines. The fuse provides a last line of safety protection to complement protection features implemented in a power controller or regulator.
Connected in series to the main power rail, the STMicroelectronics STEF01 detects and reacts to over-current and over-voltage conditions. When an overload condition occurs, the device limits the output current to a safe value defined by the user. If the overload condition persists, the device goes into an open state, disconnecting the load from the power supply.
The STEF01 electronic fuse is configurable: the under-voltage lock-out, over-voltage clamp and start-up time can be set by specifying the values of external components.
The adjustable turn-on time allows the designer to control the in-rush current during start-up and hot-swap operations. The device provides either thermal latch or auto-retry protection modes, which are selectable by means of a dedicated pin.
The STMicroelectronics STEF01 fuse provides a gate driver pin for an external power MOSFET: this may be used to implement a reverse-current blocking circuit.
