Rohm’s Ambient light sensors enables automatic control of display backlight brightness over a wide range of illumination conditions from a dark environment to direct sunlight. With the ALS input, a microcontroller (MCU) or baseband processor increases or decreases the display brightness depending on the environment. This control dramatically improves visibility and reduces power consumption since LCD backlighting can draw as much as 51% of the power in the input standby mode. In addition, the ALS signal can be used to instruct the keypad LED driver to minimize keypad backlighting taking up to 30% of the power in the input standby power mode
ROHM ambient light sensors incorporate photodiodes with differing junction depths, enabling light processing internally optimized to match the light source. This results in stable output sensitivity regardless of the light source. In conjunction to output sensitivity, ROHM incorporates our very own original laser trimming technology utilized for high light detection making ROHM’s ambient light precision 30-50% better than competitor products.
With built-in high accuracy A/D converter, ROHM ambient light sensors ensure precise measurements over a wide range of lighting conditions, from dimly-lit indoor areas to outdoor environments (1 lx steps).
Additionally, ROHM ambient light sensors include a 2 or 3 stage current output gain switching for compatibility with a wide range of brightness levels: H-Gain for mainly dark environments, M-Gain for both dim and bright conditions indoors, and L-Gain for outdoor environments.
Applications include but are not limited to mobile phones, digital cameras, video cameras, PDAs, portable gaming devices, LCD TVs, PDP TVs, car navigation systems, notebook PCs, and other electronics requiring high precision light sensing.

ROHM’s Ambient Light Sensor IC series is manufactured in accordance with the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directive restricting the use of certain materials.
The BH1600FVC has an analog current output and comes in a WSOF6 packaging size (3×1.6×0.7mm). The supply voltage range is 2.4V to 3.6V. It has sensitivity variations of ±35%, an illuminance range of 0-50000 lx, and is Lead-Free/RoHS compliant.
