The VL53L4ED is a versatile and high-accuracy Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor from STMicroelectronics designed to meet the needs of modern industrial and consumer applications.
This ToF sensor is engineered for precise, short-range measurements, supporting distances from 1 mm up to 1300 mm under standard conditions and up to 1150 mm in extended temperature environments. Its specialized settings also enable reliable measurements up to 800 mm under ambient light (5 klx). The 18° field of view and extended operating temperature range of -40°C to 105°C make it ideal for demanding applications like presence detection and system activation, even in extreme conditions.
The STMicroelectronics VL53L4ED incorporates fully embedded on-chip processing, allowing for the use of less powerful, cost-effective microcontrollers, which reduces design complexity and the overall BOM cost. Its pin-to-pin compatibility with the VL53L4CD makes it an easy upgrade for existing designs.
Leveraging STMicroelectronics' FlightSense technology, this sensor delivers absolute distance measurements independent of target color or reflectance. With its miniature reflowable package, integrated SPAD (Single Photon Avalanche Diode) array, and VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser), the VL53L4ED ensures outstanding performance across various ambient lighting conditions and a wide range of cover glass materials.
The 940 nm IR light emitted by the VL53L4ED is Class 1 certified for eye safety, making it suitable for applications where user interaction is involved.
