Microchip PIC32CM Lx Family Microcontrollers

Robust security sub-system a key feature in new 32-bit MCU

Microchip has announced the release of the industry’s first microcontroller to combine a secure sub-system with Arm® TrustZone® technology in a single package. Extending the PIC32CM Lx family of MCUs, the PIC32CM LS60 integrates Microchip’s Trust Platform secure sub-system, which makes it easier to develop end products using one MCU rather than two or more chips.

The introduction of the PIC32CM LS60 simplifies the development of smart and connected devices, as designers can go to one trusted source to find a 32-bit MCU that is designed to protect products and the end user from remote or physical attacks. In addition to the PIC32CM LS60 secure variant, a PIC32CM LE00 general-purpose variant of the PIC32CM Lx family, and a PIC32CM LS00 TrustZone technology variant without the secure sub-system, are also available.

The PIC32CM LS60 features the easy-to-use TrustZone technology, which provides a trusted hardware execution environment for security-critical processes. In addition, the device’s Trust Platform secure sub-system, which is rated High according to the Common Criteria Joint Interpretation Library, enables developers to implement industry-proven security practices and counter-measures to protect against a wide range of known remote and physical attacks.

Implementation of security functions on the PIC32CM LS60 MCU is supported by tools such as MPLAB® Code Configurator (MCC) TrustZone Manager, and the Trust Platform Design Suite, which simplifies the configuration of the secure sub-system. The Microchip Trust Platform service is available to securely provision keys and certificates.

The PIC32CM LS60 integrates an enhanced peripheral touch controller with the Driven Shield Plus feature, which prevents false touches caused by moisture, and provides high immunity to noise.

In addition, the device features core-independent SleepWalking peripherals and the Event System. These peripherals keep the MCU core in sleep mode for extended periods to reduce power consumption. The MPLAB data visualizer and power debugger tools can be used to monitor, analyze, and fine-tune power consumption numbers in real time.
