FPC/FFC connectors feature extended temperature for use in automotive applications

The FH52K series of connectors from Hirose benefit from robust design features, including a locking mechanism which handles high pull forces. The connector supports automated assembly processes.

Hirose has introduced the FH52K series, a family of flat flexible cable/flat printed circuit (FFC/FPC) connectors which meet the demanding requirements of automotive applications. Compared to standard FFC/FPC connectors, the FH52K series provides higher thermal performance, withstanding operation at temperatures up to a maximum of 125°C.

The FH52K signal-transfer performance is compatible with interface standards including MIPI D-PHY v1.2, HDMI v1.4a, and eDP v1.3.

The connector housing incorporates a robust locking structure which ensures that the actuator cannot be removed even in harsh operating conditions. The rotating actuator is supported by the tips of the contacts to form a strong hinge point rather than relying on the walls of the housing. In addition, the metal fittings provide additional support to the actuator from underneath, enabling the connector to withstand high pull forces.

Insertion of the FPC/FFC into the connector is easy because of the wide 116° opening of the actuator. Special cavities on each side of the connector, known as side catchers, are provided to hold a tabbed FPC/FFC in place: this retains the connector temporarily, helping the assembler to guide it accurately into place. A firm and clear tactile click confirms that correct locking of the FPC/FFC has been achieved, ensuring a stable and reliable connection.

An L-shape metal fitting extends from the edge of the housing to allow visual inspection of the soldering process from the top. In addition, an enhanced PCB retention force of 90 N can be achieved.

The FH52K supports automatic mounting. Hirose provides a recommended vacuum pick area.
