Renesas RAJ306001 and RAJ306010 Motor-Drive ICs

Highly integrated new motor-control chips cut board footprint in half and simplify system design

Renesas has introduced two System-in-Package (SiP) products – the RAJ306001 and RAJ306010 Motor-Drive ICs – which simplifies the design of Brushless DC (BLDC) motor-control systems in cordless and battery-powered applications.

Combining multiple functions into a single SiP, the new RAJ306001 and RAJ306010 motor-drive ICs provide excellent dynamic performance and high torque at low and high speed, while minimizing board space and system cost. By integrating multiple functions into a single component, the ICs make it easier to realize efficient and safe BLDC motor-control designs.

The RAJ306001 and RAJ306010, which integrate an RL78/G1F microcontroller and a pre-driver into an 8mm x 8mm QFN package, control three-phase BLDC motors in battery-powered devices.

The pre-driver includes a charge pump, linear regulators, current detection, programmable slew-rate control, and back EMF detection circuitry for sensorless operation. The highly integrated SiP form factor allows customers to eliminate as many as 30 external components, shrinking board footprint by as much as 50% and reducing materials and assembly costs.

Designed with heat management in mind, the new ICs feature self-aligned dead-time to prevent shoot-through. The products also offer adjustable pre-driver output-current capability of up to 500mA to drive power MOSFETs. This makes it easier to design for heat dissipation, since the IC can drive MOSFETs at the optimum time, reducing FET switching margins by 90% compared with conventional systems, and enabling highly efficient motor-drive control with reduced heat generation.

A new Renesas Solution Starter Kit (RSSK) is also available for developers working on a motor-control solution using an RAJ3060xx IC. The RSSK features a complete evaluation environment including a development board, motor, and reference firmware. It supports easy debugging and allows customers to immediately begin evaluating their motor-control design, executing real-time analysis and tuning to accelerate development.

Development Board

Board part number: RTK0EML2C0S01020BJ

This is a kit for evaluating BLDC motor-system designs based on the RAJ306010 IC. It consists of a board with an RAJ306010 mounted on it, a small 24V motor, and a connecting cable.

The RAJ306010 IC is supplied with sample code for 120° conduction control using a Hall IC. Basic evaluation of motor operation can be performed simply by connecting a 24V DC power supply and the attached motor.
