Monolithic Power Systems MA782 Angle Sensor

Compact angle sensor offers low power consumption

The MA782 angle sensor from Monolithic Power Systems provides accurate position measurements to enable efficient control of electric motors while minimizing power consumption. The MA782 detects the absolute angular position of a permanent magnet, normally a diametrically magnetized cylinder on a rotating shaft.

The sensor’s power-cycling function means that it is ideal for applications requiring low average power. The timing of the power cycling can be controlled by an on-chip clock or by an external controller. Flags are available for detecting a set amount of angle change.

The MA782 supports a wide range of magnetic field strengths and spatial configurations. Both end-of-shaft and off-axis (side-shaft) mounting configurations are supported. The MA782 features magnetic field strength detection with programmable thresholds to allow the sensing of the magnet position relative to the sensor. This is useful for functions such as the sensing of axial movements or for diagnostics.

An on-chip nonvolatile memory may be used to store configuration parameters, including the reference zero-angle position, the power-cycling parameters, the filter window determining the output resolution, and the magnetic field detection thresholds.

The MA782, supplied in a 2 mm x 2 mm QFN-14 package, is the world´s smallest angle sensor.
