Infineon — CIPOS Maxi IM818 Intelligent Power Module

The CIPOS™ Maxi IM818 Intelligent Power Module (IPM) from Infineon provides a complete, ready-made inverter power stage for driving motors, fans and pumps.

The IM818 is a 1,200 V, 10 A, three-phase IPM with open emitter in a 36 mm x 23 mm DIP package which offers excellent thermal dissipation.

The IPM integrates six 1,200 V TRENCHSTOP™ IGBTs and emitter-controlled diodes with a six-channel gate driver which is optimized to match the characteristics of the IGBTs. By integrating inverter power stage components into a single package, Infineon enables power-system designers to reduce the size of their PCB, cut bill-of-materials costs, reduce component count, and improve system reliability. 

The high-power applications for which the IM818 is intended need good thermal performance and electrical isolation, as well as overload protection and safe levels of EMI. The IM818 meets all these requirements:

• Direct bonded copper (DBC) substrate offers excellent conduction of waste heat away from the module’s power components
• Dual in-line molded module is a fully isolated package
• Rugged 1,200V silicon-on-insulator gate driver technology withstands transient and negative voltages
• Over-current shutdown protects against overloads
• All six switches turn off when protection functions are active
• 20 kHz maximum PWM carrier frequency

The compact footprint of the IM818 and the high level of integration mean that the module is ideal for use in space-constrained designs.
