STMicroelectronics LSM6DSO32X Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) System-in-Package (SiP) Format

Six-axis inertial measurement module features machine learning core

The LSM6DSO32X from STMicroelectronics is an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) supplied in a System-in-Package (SiP) format, and integrating a three-axis digital accelerometer which measures acceleration up to 32g, and a three-axis digital gyroscope. The sensor offers always-on low-power features for use in small, battery-powered activity trackers.

The LSM6DSO32X includes a dedicated machine learning core and a finite state machine: these features enable some algorithms which would typically run in the host application processor to be moved to the MEMS sensor. This offers the advantage of reducing system power consumption, because it allows the host processor to spend longer in sleep mode, as well as reducing latency.

The machine learning capability can be used to combine user-defined classes derived from specific data sets which can be used to autonomously recognize specific activities such as running, walking, and driving. In addition, ST supplies the LSM6DSO32X with built-in hardware functions such as a pedometer, step detector, step counter, tilt detection, and significant motion detection. The sensor also supports a range of standard interrupt functions, including:

  • Free-fall
  • Wake-up
  • 6D/4D orientation
  • Click and double-click

The LSM6DSO32X has a full-scale acceleration range of ±4/±8/±16/±32g and an angular rate range of ±125/±250/±500/±1,000/±2,000 degrees/s. The sensor is able to withstand high mechanical shocks, making it suitable for use in products which need to achieve high standards of reliability.

The IMU is compatible with the Android™ mobile operating environment, easing integration into consumer devices.

The LSM6DSO32X is supplied in a plastic LGA package measuring 2.5mm x 3mm x 0.83mm.
