New low-power MCUs combine high-resolution analogue peripherals with support for OTA updates

The Renesas RA2A2 MCUs perform digitization at 24-bit resolution, enabling precise monitoring of energy consumption and tight control of power consumption in home appliances, building automation and medical devices.

Renesas has introduced the RA2A2 series of microcontrollers to give design engineers a new option when they require high-performance, high-resolution analogue peripherals combined with low power consumption.

Based on a 48 MHz Arm® Cortex®-M23 processor, the new RA2A2 products feature a 24-bit sigma-delta ADC alongside a high-speed on-chip oscillator with frequency tolerance of ±1.0%, and a temperature sensor. The MCU also includes dual banks of code Flash and a bank-swap function for the implementation of over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates.

The RA2A2 devices offer multiple power structures as well as voltage detection hardware to enable energy-efficient operation while drawing current as low as 100 µA/MHz in active mode, and 0.40 µA in software standby mode.

On-chip security functions include hardware acceleration for AES cryptography.

The new MCUs are supported by the Renesas Flexible Software Package (FSP). The FSP enables faster application development by providing all the infrastructure software needed, including multiple real-time operating systems (RTOSs), a board support package, peripheral drivers, middleware, connectivity, networking, and security stacks, as well as reference software to build complex AI, motor control and cloud solutions. The package enables customers to integrate their own legacy code and choice of RTOS.

Using the FSP eases migration of RA2A2 designs to larger RA devices.
