FPGA breaks new ground in low-end market with low price and small package footprint

The new SLG47910V ForgeFPGA product from Renesas has sufficiently low power consumption to be used in wearable devices, but still packs the logic and memory resources needed for functions such as glue logic and protocol conversion.

Renesas has launched a product which is set to radically change the market for low-density FPGAs. By combining a robust and valuable feature set with low power consumption, low price, and free, easy-to-use development software, the new SLG47910V ForgeFPGA device opens the door to low-density FPGA development to all embedded system designers.

The SLG47910V is unusually small for an FPGA – it is supplied in a 24-pin QFN package with a 3.0 mm x 3.0 mm footprint – and consumes surprisingly little power, making it suitable for use in wearable devices and other space- and power-constrained designs.

The SLG47910V contains a dense array of configurable logic elements:

  • 1,120 6-input, 2-output look-up tables (LUTs)
  • 1,120 D Flip-Flops (DFFs)
  • 5 kbits of distributed memory
  • 32 kbits of block RAM (BRAM)

The FPGA’s configuration is created by programming a one-time programmable memory to arrange the interconnect logic, the I/O pins, and the macrocells. This allows this small, low-power device to perform a wide variety of FPGA functions, including:

  • Sensor data aggregation and pipelining
  • Protocol conversion
  • Glue logic and edge processing
  • Advanced power sequencing

Features

  • 50 MHz on-chip oscillator
  • Phase-locked loop
    • Input from external source or internal oscillator
  • Power supply
    • VDDIO: 1.71 V to 2.75 V
    • VDDC: 1.1 V ±10%
  • Power-on reset (POR)
  • 19 GPIOs
  • Bitstream security features
  • Operating-temperature range: -40°C to 85°C

Applications

  • Consumer electronics
  • Data communications equipment
  • Notebook and tablet computers
