Microchip Smart Embedded Vision Development Platform

New FPGA-based development tool extends options for designing secure and reliable embedded vision systems

Microchip has extended its Smart Embedded Vision initiative with a new development tool for designers using the PolarFire® FPGA RISC-V system-on-chip (SoC).

The Smart Embedded Vision platform simplifies the development of edge computing solutions in the thermally challenging environments of the industrial IoT and factory automation applications. It is complemented by the VectorBlox software development kit and IP, which may be used in PolarFire devices to program a trained neural network without prior FPGA expertise.

The low-power PolarFire SoCs are the only mid-range devices of their kind to simultaneously support dual 4K video processing alongside a real-time operating system (RTOS) and the Linux® operating system on a quad-core RISC-V processor.

The Smart Embedded Vision platform offers a rich set of IP, hardware, and tools. For embedded vision, these include:

  • Dual 4K MIPI CSI-2 cameras
  • HDMI® 2.0 interface with expansion based on the FPGA Mezzanine Card (FMC)
  • CoaXPress® 2.0 interface
  • Serial digital interface (SDI) running at 6 Gbits/s and 12 Gbits/s
  • Universal Serial 10 Gigabit Ethernet media independent interface MAC IP with auto-negotiation
  • USB 3.1 Gen 1 and Gen 2 protocols

For the industrial IoT and factory automation, the Smart Embedded Vision platform offers:

  • Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® connectivity
  • USB 2.0 interface
  • SD card interface
  • Embedded MultiMediaCard (eMMC) interface
  • Fully integrated PCIe® end-point and root port functionality configured for four lanes
  • mikroBUS connector which can be used with Microchip’s Trust&GO platform for secure cloud connectivity

The platform also includes support for Microchip’s Mi-V RISC-V ecosystem, including development tools from AdaCore, Green Hills Software, Mentor Graphics, and Wind River.
