FTM / Embedded Processing and Software / Infineon — P7 Superjunction MOSFETs
Infineon has applied its latest P7 N-channel superjunction MOSFET technology to a family of 700 V CoolMOS™ MOSFETs for use in flyback power converters. The P7 MOSFETs are suitable for use in low-power switch-mode power supplies, including in consumer devices, lighting, and auxiliary power supplies.
The 700 V CoolMOS P7 MOSFETs offer an improvement in efficiency of as much as 4% compared to competing devices, as well as operating at a device temperature as much as 16°C lower. Compared with the earlier Infineon 650 V CoolMOS C6 technology, the 700 V P7 MOSFETs offer 2.4% better efficiency and 12°C lower device temperature when used in a flyback-based charger application operating at a switching frequency of 140 kHz.
The high efficiency of the P7 MOSFETs is in part due to the extremely low product of on-resistance and switching losses. Cost-competitive, the P7 MOSFETs provide a higher efficiency gain compared to competing products, at a higher switching speed. Operating at higher switching frequencies helps designers to reduce the size of power-converter circuit magnetics, lowering bill-of-materials costs and system size.
With a low gate-source threshold voltage, the P7 MOSFETs are also easy to drive and integrate into power-converter designs.
