Mid-mount USB Type-C receptacles reduce profile of USB 2.0 and charging applications

Five new USB Type-C® receptacles from Global Connector Technology (GCT) provide a cost-effective way to minimize the height of product designs, as they are mounted in a PCB cut-out. These parts are ideal for applications which only require USB 2.0 functionality or USB charging.

GCT has reduced the number of pins in the USB45xx USB Type-C connectors from a standard 24 to either 6 or 16. The receptacles can provide the high-speed charging capabilities expected of a USB Type-C connection, but the reduced pin count enables the product to be offered at a lower cost than a full-function USB Type-C receptacle.

The 6-pin USB Type-C connectors from GCT supply an output current of 3 A, while the 16-pin connectors support USB 2.0 connectivity at an output current of 5 A.

A range of vertical offset configurations, measured from the top side of the PCB to the underside of the connector, is available in the USB45xx products, ranging from 0.8 mm to 2.1 mm.
