FTM / Connectivity / STMicroelectronics — STM32WL55 Wireless SoC
The STM32WL55 from STMicroelectronics is a system-on-chip (SoC) which combines a dual-core microcontroller with a sub-1 GHz radio to provide low-power wide-area networking (LPWAN) capability.
The STM32WL55 implements LoRa® radio communications, as well as supporting the (G)FSK, (G)MSK and BPSK long-range radio modulation schemes. Featuring a similar hardware specification, the STM32WL54 SoC supports (G)FSK, (G)MSK and BPSK modulation but not the LoRa protocol.
By integrating a full-featured MCU based on dual Arm® Cortex®-M4 and Cortex-M0+ cores and a sub-1 GHz radio into a single chip, ST enables developers of connected industrial and IoT applications to simplify board design and assembly process, and to reduce bill-of-materials costs. The SoC’s Cortex-M0+ core performs various security services including secure firmware updating, secure firmware installation and management of secure keys. Application code runs on the Cortex-M4 core.
The SoC is backed by the comprehensive STM32WL software library and various packaged software examples available with the STM32CubeWL MCU package. It supports a wide choice of integrated development environments including IAR Embedded Workbench®, MDK-ARM, and STM32CubeIDE.
ST also supplies the STM32WLE5 and STM32WLE4 wireless SoCs, which feature the same sub-1GHz radio alongside a single Cortex-M4 core. Both products support (G)FSK, (G)MSK and BPSK modulation, and the STM32WLE5 also implements LoRa networking. Unlike the STM32WL5x products, these single-core MCUs do not include advanced security features.
Board Part Number: NUCLEO-WL55JC
The NUCLEO-WL55JC board provides a time-saving platform for the development of connected industrial and IoT applications based on the STM32WL55/54 series of wireless microcontrollers.
The board features Arduino Uno V3 connectivity and ST morpho headers to provide an easy means of expanding the functionality of the STM32WL Nucleo open development platform with a wide choice of specialized shields. This Nucleo board does not require a discrete probe as it includes an integrated STLINK-V3E debugger and programmer.
The Nucleo board is available in two versions:
