FTM / Connectivity / Microchip — BM83 Bluetooth Audio Module
The BM83 from Microchip is a dual-mode Bluetooth® 5.0 module which offers a highly integrated audio streaming solution for wireless speakers. It is based on the Microchip IS2083 Bluetooth audio IC.
The module is offered in multiple variants with different versions of firmware, each of which contains an on-board Bluetooth stack and audio profiles. All the variants support 24-bit/96 kHz high-resolution audio formats to enable speakers to produce high-fidelity wireless audio outputs.
An integrated DSP decodes AAC and SBC audio codecs, and performs advanced audio and voice processing such as wide-band speech, acoustic echo cancellation, and noise reduction.
The module includes a power amplifier, and the embedded mode functionality enables system control without a host microcontroller. The device is backed by a graphical configuration tool for PCs. Firmware can be updated via a USB or UART wired interface, or over-the-air.
The BM83SM1-00AB module implements Microchip’s proprietary Wireless Concert Technology (WCT), which streams audio to multiple devices from a single audio source. Featuring tight speaker synchronization, WCT delivers uninterrupted music to a network of speakers for party streaming.
The BM83SM1-00TA module implements A2DP source capability using audio transceiver firmware. This enables Bluetooth capability in non-Bluetooth audio equipment via a dongle.

The BM83 Bluetooth audio development board is a complete solution for developing Bluetooth audio applications, including portable speakers and headphones. The BM83 EVB features an on-board PIC32 for host MCU mode applications, an external codec to improve audio quality, a digital microphone to capture voice audio, and indicator LEDs and buttons for ease of development.
