A development system supporting high-efficiency AC-DC designs up to 250 W, featuring active PFC and LLC stages with MCU support for output current control.

The new Lightning Development System from Future Electronics supports AC-DC designs up to 250 W, utilizing the TEA2017 combination controller from NXP. The TEA2017 integrates active PFC control and LLC DC-DC control, enabling high efficiency across a wide input power range. The PFC stage supports discontinuous conduction mode, quasi-resonant mode, and continuous conduction mode, ensuring high power factor and low harmonic distortion over a broad range of power levels.
Key Highlights
- A plug-in card on the output, including an LPC800 MCU and additional components, facilitates interface and control of output current settings.
- The output voltage is nominally configured for 42 V, but alternative LLC transformer designs can support reconfiguration for a 48 V output.
- Silicon power MOSFETs are used throughout the design, balancing high performance with cost-effectiveness.
- Synchronous rectification is provided on the secondary-side of the ac-dc stage using 150-V rated Si MOSFETs using centre-tapped transformer configuration (supporting output voltage levels to 52 V maximum).

In portable systems, robotics, and other electronics sectors, power engineers face increasing pressure to deliver higher power density and reduced system weight. With the superior switching capabilities of MasterGaN1, faster switching frequencies can be achieved in resonant LLC DC-DC power stages without compromising efficiency. This enables significant reductions in the size of bulky magnetic components.
The integrated dual-driver and dual-GaN HEMT in a half-bridge configuration, along with the compact package size of MasterGaN1, further supports high power density.
The GaNstar development system enables power designers to leverage these advantages. It provides guidance and support for implementing fast-response digital control using the STM32G4 microcontroller family. Digital control of resonant LLC DC-DC operation is achieved on the primary side, enabling a unified AC-DC solution (PFC and DC-DC stages) with a single STM32G4 microcontroller.
