Enhanced Backlight Solutions (EBS) from Future  Electronics

The Solution

How EBS™ Works

Most LCDs have CCFL backlights. In the EBS™ solution, these CCFL backlights are removed and replaced with an array of LUXEON® LEDs. See Figure 4 for an example of how a typical LCD with EBS™ looks.

The LED array is aimed directly at a 90 degree reflector and is directed toward the LCD light-guide. The light-guide is typically made up of clear acrylic with a silk screen pattern on the inside, to help direct the light toward face of the LCD. A diffuser is typically used to increase the uniformity of the light. 3M Bef films are used in the stack up to increase the light developed in the in the backlight by up to 59% depending on the film stack up. As an example, in the 10.4" EBS™ unit, in order to achieve the measured 1000 nits, the backlight has to develop at least 14400 nits before it passes through the LCD (see Figure 5).
