FAQs

Q. How bright is an EBS™ unit?

A. All EBS™ units are specified at the brightness level equal to 1000 nits of brightness. Typically this is 0.8 Watts per LED. With the correct thermal management it is possible to drive the LUXEON® LEDs harder, which will enable brightness in excess of 1000 nits (see Figure 2).

Q. Is there a limit to how hard I can drive the EBS™ unit in order to achieve more brightness?

A. Each unit has LUXEON® III installed in the unit. This means you can drive the EBS™ unit harder and achieve a higher brightness level, but active cooling must be used. It is not recommended that you exceed the LUXEON® III specifications on drive current. You should refer to the LUXEON® III datasheet, available at www.lumileds.com/pdfs/DS45.PDF

Q. How do I cool the unit if I want to drive the unit higher than 1 Watt per LUXEON® LED?

A. Using a heat sink will allow for dissipation of heat from the LED. Basic heat sinks are available from Aavid Thermalloy. It is also possible to use a fan as a cooling element. A passive heat sink is required at all times. If you choose to drive the LUXEON® LEDs higher than 1 Watt you will need to employ the use of a passive heat sink with active cooling and fans. Your Future Electronics representative can assist you with your thermal management requirements.

Q. What is the MTBF of EBS™?

A. At the standard brightness level of 1K nits (approx 0.8 watts per LED) the MTBF is well over 100K hours.

Q. What is the MTBF of a standard CCFL backlight?

A. A new CCFL will produce 100% of its potential light. As it is used, the light emitted decreases over time. The MTBF calculations of an LCD are based on the half brightness point (or emitting 50% of the light generated when new) of the CCFL tube. This is typically 25-50K hours.

Q. What is the typical MTBF of the LCD without the backlight?

A. Typically, the light source fails before the LCD itself. The LCD itself typically has an MTBF of approx. 300K hours. The EBS™ delays MTBF normally associated with CCFL backlights.

Q. What is the lumen maintenance of the LUXEON® III LED at 3 Watts?

A. The LUXEON® III LED has a lumen maintenance of 70% at 50K hours when driven at 3 Watts per LED. The typical EBS™ solution, if driven at its specified wattage to obtain 1K nits of brightness, uses less than 1 Watt per LED, consequently increasing the overall MTBF of the backlight solution to well above 100K hours.

Q. What is the Color Temperature range of the EBS™ units?

A. Color temperature ranges from 6500K to 8000K.

Q. What is the Brightness Uniformity of the EBS™ units?

A. The typical EBS™ unit has the same brightness uniformity of the stock LCD panel - typically 1.25 based on a five point measure system.

Q. What is Rth?

A. Rth signifies Temperature Resistance. This is the temperature difference across a unit area of a material of unit thickness when a unit of heat energy flows through it in unit time. In other words if a heat sink has a 5°C/W rating, there will be a 5°C increase in the heat sink as 1W of power conducts through the material.
